On one side of 161st
and river avenue rests a great cathedral, one that has seen eighty years of
history. From baseball, to football, to boxing Yankee Stadium has seen it all.
Last season Yankee Stadium shut its lights off for the final time. But while
one Stadium was closing, another one was opening. Across the street on the
other side of 161st and River
Avenue was the brand new cathedral, one built for
the 21st century. (more)

On a brisk Tuesday afternoon, the Beacon Girl’s Varsity Softball
team journeyed with bats in hand to East RiverPark to start their season against the
High School of Graphic Communication Arts. Led by their
coach, Richard Miller, the team played a great game and won by a shutout with a
score of 20-0. The Beacon girls had 10
hits, stole several bases and hustled like it was there last game. There were big hits by junior Hasnah Farraj, and senior
captain Andrea Jimenez. Junior
pitcher Devinne Gallagher, had 10
strikeouts. In 2008 Devinne was ranked as
the #1 pitcher in the Manhattan BII league and 5th in all PSAL in
strikeouts.

As tennis season starts up again,
everyone is looking forward to see how the season will turn out. The tennis
team has a lot to live up to, having won the PSAL championship last year and in
2006. Both players and coach Bayard Faithful have an exciting season ahead of
them.

“We have three goals this year” says
coach Bayard Faithful “win the PSAL, win the best high school tournament, and
win the Mayors cup”. The Beacon Tennis team, in their career, has already won
the PSAL and the best High school tournament however they have not won the
mayors cup yet. The mayor cup consists of both public and private school teams
playing against each other, and winning this tournament will make history not
only that, it will make Bayard Faithful very proud.

The tennis team has already started out
strong, winning four games so far and losing none. Of course none of this comes
easy, students put in plenty of hours of practice a week and aside from
practice in school many players have private coaches, which they practice with
outside of school. All the extra time and effort these players put into tennis
practice will pay off when they reach there three goals for the year. The team
consists of sixteen players; freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors, all of
which are doing there best. “ We are excited for this season and I can already
feel it in my gut that our three goals will be reach this year” Bayard says as
he gets up to leave for practice, having a coach so dedicated to his team is in
my opinion what will bring them on step closer to winning the mayors cup

            Led by
their stellar defense, the defending champion Blue Demons appeared to be in
mid-season form defeating LaGuardia 5-0 this past Friday. The Blue Demons came
out looking to score early and often, with four first half goals. Sophomore
Sophia Kingler opened the scoring in the early minutes of the game. Beacon
never looked back.Moments later, junior Christina Angione put in a shot
that floated right over the goalie’s head. LaGuardia had enough at this point,
and made a goalie switch. Unfortunately for LaGuardia this made no difference
as junior Elsa Hardy added two more goals before halftime. While Beacon was
pouring on these goals, their defense held LaGuardia to zero shots in the first
half. The score at the half was Beacon 4
LaGuardia 0.

The Blue Demons defense, led by their
captain Chelsea Davis, kept up their great defense in the second half. They
only allowed a handful of shots throughout the game, with none of these shots
being legitimate scoring opportunities. As the game was coming to an end junior
Caroline Quigley poked in one more goal making the final score 5-0.

Beacon looks like a team ready to defend
their title. In their two league games Beacon has outscored their opponents
12-0 in their two games. At 2-0, the Blue Demons are tied for first in their
PSAL division.

Fencing: 2009 Preview

By Leya Kayasbeaconschoolathletics.com With coach and teacher Ndabaningi
Simmons at the head, both team and coach look forward to the coming season.

For the most part, fencing has been
ignored in New York’s
community. There are only six fencing teams in the entire city: Bronx High
School of Science, Stuyvesant, HunterCollegeHigh School,
FrederickDouglassAcademy, LaGuardiaHigh School and the BeaconSchool.
The turnouts at most bouts are virtually only the teams, friends, and family
members. In the past, fencing has seemed to be reserved for refined young men
of the upper class society. Giving a sport and skill to what had originally
been an art of warfare; fencing has become, though the underdog of the Beacon
Demons teams, Beacon veteran fencer Teela Wyman says “a great place to make and
hang out with friends… [Overall] it’s a group of enthusiastic ladies with a
passion for the sport. Whether experienced or not, we come together as a team,
which in itself is a triumph.” Taking its roots from European
combat sports, the name itself comes from William Shakespeare, who (as he is
known to do) transformed the word defens from
the Middle English term, which had originally come from the Italian word defensio. In his comedy, Merry Wives of Windsor, he first
introduced the term in the line, "Alas sir, I cannot fence.” The sport
itself, requiring balance, agility, a speed of mind and body, utilization of
strategy, and a strong set of leg muscles, is serious and requires much more
than poking people with a long stick (even if many of the fencers greet each
other jokingly as they enter the gym with a “Hello! Ready to go stab things?”).
Entire bouts must be spent on bent knees, with mask and protective wear,
pushing forward in attack to get their touch. It takes five touches in the valid
target area to win a bout. From experience, admittedly, this is not always as
easy as it sounds.

In comparison to last year, the
turnout has grown considerably. 15 fencers are on the roster this year, 5 of
whom are returning. Pearl Steinberg, one of the returning fencers, exclaimed at
the fact that tryouts had to be held this year to determine positions. Coach
Simmons feels that this year has a very positive attitude, that “the girls are
working hard and are getting a lot of alumni help”. Thanks to the alumnus
Sylvia, who has been practicing with the girls and giving them tips, Simmons is
enthusiastic. “Her help has played a big part this season,” he said with a nod.
With Sylvia’s and Simmons’ help, Ayaka Kato, Eliana Kirshenblat, , and Ebon McGlown
at the team’s head, and with determination, they’ll begin the season with their
first bout on Wednesday, March 25, 2009. One can do nothing but wish them luck.

On Tuesday, March 24, there was a game between the Beacon
Blue Demons and the high school of graphic communication arts. Gabriel Faithfull
was pitching for the Blue Demons. Gabriel pitched a complete game (7 innings),
gave up 5 hits, one earned run and struck out 11. His Era is 1.00. The pitcher
for graphic communications is Algenis Vicente. He walked seven and struck out
six. Vicente also gave up six hits and was taken out in the sixth inning. Vicente’s Era is 0.00. In the sixth inning Graphics and
communications scored on a sac fly that would have tied the game, but Beacon
argued that the runner on third left third base before the ball was in the
outfielder’s glove. So the call was reverse. The Blue Demons won a final of 2-1.

Beacon Boys Varsity Basketball: A year in Review

BeaconSchoolAthletics.com InternMarch 10th, 2009

As the weather outside gets warmer, the
attention turns from the dark, cold days of winter to the bright, fun days of
spring. However, while the weather in the winter did not provide much heat, the
Beacon Boy’s Varsity basketball team was doing just the opposite. Under Head
Coach John Sarci, the boys played their way to a 15-9 regular season record,
going 12-6 in PSAL play. That record allowed Beacon to continue its ten year playoff
streak. Even though their run in the playoffs was short lived, Beacon has much
to celebrate from this past year.

“Having two top 100 city scorers, means three
other people have to accept roles, not scoring. Any three players did that.”
Scoring was certainly not a problem for the Demons this year. The Demon’s
scoring attack was led by sophomore Aldin Medunjanin,
who is ranked 21st in the top 100 scorers in the city, he averaged
19.5 points per game. In addition, sophomore Marlon Cirker, ranked 91st
in the top 100, averaged 14.8 points per game. Besides being able scorers,
Marlon and Aldin were also effective dishing the ball to other players. Aldin
ranked 6th in assists, in the Manhattan
A northwest division, averaging almost four assists per game. While Marlon
averaged 2.5 assists per game and Senior Frank Miller averaged almost two
assists per game.

Before a game was actually played, Coach Sarci
made sure that the players were always ready to love the game of basketball and
commit to the team. “I wish all players possessed certain characteristics: a
love and passion for the game, a willingness to work with others to reach a
common goal.”

Despite some negativity, the season was still
filled with great moments. For Coach Sarci, that moment game not during a game,
but from simply talking to one of his players. “ …when Julius Ng, a bench player who had a limited
role…approached me and said “Sarci I don’t care how much playing time I get, as
long as I can do whatever I can in practice and a game.” Just one example of
the fine young players Coach Sarci is grooming for the next level.

As for the future, Coach Sarci would not
articulate what his plans would be. “Every year is different from the next, you
really have to see the type of personnel…” Whatever the future holds it has become expected
that coach Sarci will lead another team to Beacon Blue Demon immortality.
