On a brisk Tuesday afternoon, the Beacon Girl’s Varsity Softball
team journeyed with bats in hand to East RiverPark to start their season against the
High School of Graphic Communication Arts. Led by their
coach, Richard Miller, the team played a great game and won by a shutout with a
score of 20-0. The Beacon girls had 10
hits, stole several bases and hustled like it was there last game. There were big hits by junior Hasnah Farraj, and senior
captain Andrea Jimenez. Junior
pitcher Devinne Gallagher, had 10
strikeouts. In 2008 Devinne was ranked as
the #1 pitcher in the Manhattan BII league and 5th in all PSAL in
strikeouts.

When asked about his hopes for the season Coach Miller
responded that he is looking forward “to seeing all the girls improve and come
together as a team.” With the team
practicing in the Beacon gym and out in the park they have really shown their
commitment to building a winning team.
Coach Miller commented that his goal is to have all the players “learn
the basics and play together as a team.”
The Beacon Girl’s Softball team is led by senior captian, Andrea Jimenez. When asked
to think of goals she has for her team she said, “Honestly I want to get
everyone to play their best and really improve to build a stronger team.” Andrea has played on the Beacon Girl’s
Softball team since freshman year and as catcher she sees the entire field
whenever she sits behind home plate. In
reflecting on the first game she said “it was really successful because even if
our opponents were that good it really relaxed the team’s nerves and showed
them that you need to have fun in order to succeed.”
With the start to their season the Beacon Girl’s Softball Team begins
their 2009 season with a bang. Though it
was a chilly day, the team started their season with a knock out win.
