Major
League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse
league, today announced that the Denver Outlaws have traded Midfielder Benson Erwin to the Washington Bayhawks, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross.
In exchange for Erwin and their fifth overall pick in the 2009
Collegiate Draft, the Denver will receive Washington’s first round
pick, which is the second overall pick in the 2009 Draft.
Erwin,
27, began his MLL career with the Bayhawks back in 2005 when the team
(then located in Baltimore) selected him with the fourth overall pick
in the 2005 MLL Collegiate draft following a successful collegiate
career at Johns Hopkins University which culminated in an NCAA
Championship with the Blue Jays that spring. Erwin appeared in 8 games
for the Bayhawks, scoring 1 goal while collected 18 groundballs.
Following the 2005 season, he was selected by the Denver Outlaws with the 11th
overall pick in the Expansion Draft. In 2008, Erwin appeared in 11
regular season games for Denver, collecting a career-high 28
groundballs. He was also named to the 2008 All-Star Game as a member
of the Western Conference squad.
In
43 career regular season games, Erwin has recorded 6 goals, 1 two-point
goal, 15 assists, and 83 groundballs. He has also appeared in 5
postseason games with the Outlaws collecting 1 goal, 2 assists and 10
groundballs.
"Trading
Benson is a very difficult decision. It’s always hard to part ways
with a player of Benson Erwin’s talent and character. He has been a
huge part of our organization and I want to thank him for his
commitment to our team and wish him the best of luck with Washington.
In obtaining the 2nd pick in the collegiate draft, I believe we have
positioned ourselves to get another impact player that could fill a
need and become a star in the league right away."
Off the field, Erwin is also the logistics coordinator for Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-MD.
The
2009 Major League Lacrosse Season begins on Friday, May 15 with the
Washington Bayhawks hosting the Toronto Nationals at Navy-Marine Corps
Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD. The rest of the action gets
underway on Saturday, May 16 with the Boston Cannons hosting the Long
Island Lizards at Harvard Stadium and the Denver Outlaws hosting the
Chicago Machine at INVESCO Field.
